About the Author
Desmond Bagley wrote 16 novels, becoming one of the world's top-selling authors, with his books translated into more than 30 languages. He was born in 1923 in Kendal and brought up in Blackpool, beginning his working life, aged 14, in the printing industry. After working in an aircraft factory during the Second World War, he decided to travel, working his way through Europe and southern Africa, and in 1951 joined the gold mining industry before becoming a freelance journalist in Johannesburg, where he wrote his first novel, The Golden Keel, in 1962. In 1964 he returned to England, finally settling in Guernsey with his wife, where he died in 1983.

Two Classic Books for the Price of Half a Book

This is two books, not one, so briefly: (There are partial/early plot spoilers here, but definitely no ending given away, 50 pages in, you will know what I am talking about)
Landslide is one of my all-time favourite action, drama, mystery books. It is not only whodunnit, but who are you/who am I? (read it and you will understand) A great book with action, romance and a few laughs as well. Desmond Bagley at his best.
High Citadel is another all-time favourite, because it is at heart a war between bad guys with guns and explosives and a group of people fighting to survive with courage, brains, and what can only be described as medieval weapons.
A little dated, these were written a while ago when Cuba and Russia were the boogie men, but classics up there with the best.

High Citadel / Landslide

I was very happy to see High Citadel reprinted since my paperback copy is falling apart. Desmond Bagley writes great fast paced adventure stories. This one takes place in the Andes where a pilot and his passengers have to find a way to survive high in the Andes when they become embroiled in the political machinations of an incipient civil war. I like the way that Desmond Bagley's characters find unexpected depths and talents.
Landslide was a previously unknown work to me. I don't feel that it is as strong a story as most of his other work but it is still a very fine story. It is a story of a man that can't remember his past returning to a place that could trigger his memories which could effect the balance of power in an isolated area. The juxtaposiiton between the technical and psychological reminds me of another of Desmond Bagley's books "The Snow Tiger". However these two stories are quite different.

Two Classic Bagleys

Two outstanding Bagley novels in one package. High Citadel has the pilot hero and the people he's flying struggling against communist guerrillas to escape after their plane crashes high in the Andes. It was written in an era which wasn't as politically correct, so there are some stereotypes - the incompetent South Americans, the domineering Russian, the bravery of an American.
Landslide has some truly evocative descriptions of the wilds of British Columbia, a tough hero, a beautiful, but feminist-pre-feminism heroine and the nicely etched hero's allies. A great pre-Rambo chase through the wilds of a mountainous, cold forest and the climax that saves a forest and destroys the villains.
Two super books in one package. I enjoyed it.
