Stuck in a desk job tracking foreign terrorists while children are slaughtered, churches are blown up and race riots erupt across the country, Thorn uses his special relationship with FBI Agent Helen Gray to find out who is responsible for the growing chaos. As usual, Bond manages to make his story exciting, frightening and full of action. Like Tom Clancy, he paints a broad canvas filled with tight close-ups, a technique that energizes the narrative and gives it a wide-ranging, expansive feel. Unusual for this genre is the nuanced characterization, especially that of Helen Gray, which should broaden Bond's appeal to female readers. The topical plot is constructed for speed and action rather than polemic; while Bond makes frequent reference to freedoms that Americans allegedly take for granted, such background detail never gets in the way of his expert storytelling. Beneath the gadgetry, though, this is a story of man against man: Thorn versus the ruthless and strategically clever Iranian General Taleh. Taleh's grand plan is to succeed where Saddam failed and grab Saudi oil fields. The scheme depends on keeping American forces away; Taleh ties them down with a tremendous terrorist offensive in the U.S., using white supremacists disguised as the terrorists. Much of this cliche-ridden, techno-thrilling pulp describes the Bosnian Muslim agents Taleh recruits and the outrages they commit, such as igniting a Chicago race riot by murdering black schoolchildren. Thorn eventually decodes Taleh's communications with the real terrorists. From there, the cavalry takes off for Tehran in a raid planned almost exactly like that old failure at Desert One in 1980--except this time, the helicopters fly right. I originally read this book way back in '97...and it's frightening just how prescient Larry Bond was, right down to the methodology used by the terrorists.
(SPOILER ALERT) What methodology, you ask? The terrorists manage to heighten racial tensions in the USA by "creating" isolated incidents, which morph into larger protests, and they incite even greater racial violence. A techno-thriller packed with action from beginning to end

After reading four of his books, I have learned my lesson: start early so that you can finish before your eyes start closing. When a book is as engrossing as this one, I just can't stop reading. Protagonist Colonel Peter Thorn must uncover clues and peel away many layers of misdirection if he is to understand the real danger, who is responsible and what is the objective.

A tanker explodes on the Golden Gate Bridge - when the evidence points to Iran, a cruise missile strike is launched in retaliation - Iranian general Taleh summons Thorn, an old friend, to Iran to convince him that it was a rogue group: to demonstrate his desire for peace Talesh destroys all of the groups facilities - then in the US a series of seemingly unrelated attacks, including a school massacre, a massive bombing at Disneyland, an airliner blown out of the skies with a shoulder fired missile, etc., paralyzes the US and turns ethic groups against each other - and then . . .

This well written novel elevates Larry Bond to my list of favorite authors. This techno-thriller is action packed and does not include any erroneous text that you have to skip over.

Fred Allen's TREADMILL TO OBLIVION (1954) is a quick read, mainly because half the book is lengthy reprints of radio show scripts.

Allen's decision to quit radio after 17 seasons was due to low ratings, sky-high blood pressure and changing times. As he comments in the last couple of pages, "Television was already conducting itself provocatively, trying to get radio to pucker up for the kiss of death....When television belatedly found its way into the home, after stopping off too long at the tavern, the advertisers knew they had a more potent force available for selling purposes. Radio was abandoned like the bones at a barbeque."

Throughout the book, Fred has nothing but contempt for ad executives-- untalented, clueless individuals (in his estimation) who constantly interfered with format and content. Twice he was forced to abandon popular runnng gags because some ad man found them boring. His "Town Hall Tonight" theme was axed by another genius sponsor's rep, who thought the concept was "corny."

Yet for all those years and despite outside interference, Allen and scriptwriters like Herman Wouk soldiered on, assembling one of radio's wittiest programs.

One running gag that couldn't be silenced was the Benny/Allen feud, a chance invention that was born the night Allen had a child violin prodigy on as a guest. After the kid knocked off a brilliant rendering of Schubert's "The Bee," Fred openly challenged Jack to equal the feat, a bold move, as Benny had radio's most popular show. The resultant series of tongue-in-cheek insults Fred and Jack traded for many weeks culminated in an off-mike fistfight between the two on Benny's broadcast, one described by announcer Don Wilson. The charade was immediately revealed when the "combatants" were next heard fondly reminiscing about their vaudeville days.

Another reprint of a memorable broadcast is of Britisher Capt. Knight and his Golden eagle, Mr. Ramshaw. The script was abandoned when Ramshaw took wing in the studio and wouldn't return to Knight's arm. He also let loose with some ad-lib eagle "bombs." Allen's program continued while in the background, Knight was frantically tryng to capture his naughty bird. Forty minutes of sustained audience laughter drowned out anything Fred and cast had to say.

Fred's "inside the show" comments are too few. Although a reader familiar with him, wife Portland, Benny, George Jessel, Orson Welles and other guests can imagine their voices while perusing these pages, it's not as much fun as listening to broadcasts. The denizens of Allen's Alley equally suffer from the printed word.

The book is divided into four sections: IN THE BEGINNING, TOWN HALL TONIGHT, THE NEW THEME and ALLEN'S ALLEY. There's no photos. Segment titles and the end page are decorated with Al Hirschfeld line drawing caricatures of Fred. (One of these is also the dust jacket art.)

Her central argument is that competing orientations to critical literacy education − domination (power), access, diversity, design − foreground one over the other, but are crucially interdependent and need to work together to create possibilities for redesign and social action that serve a social justice agenda. She examines the theory underpinning each orientation, and develops new theory in the argument for interdependence and integration.

Sitting at the interface between theory and practice, constantly moving from one to the other, the text is rich with examples of how to use these orientations in real teaching contexts, and how to use them to counterbalance one another.

In the groundbreaking final chapter Janks considers how the rationalist underpinning of critical literacy tends to exclude the non-rational shows ways of working ‘beyond reason’ − pleasure and play, desire and the unconscious − and makes the case that these need to be taken seriously given their power to cut across the work of critical literacy educators working from any orientation.

Powerfully insightful

Hilary Janks crosses
cultural boundaries to reach educators in both Africa and America with her thoughts about critical literacy. She challenged me to think about more ways to develop critical literacy with my students. Because our world evolves around linear, concrete thinking it doesn't provoke reflection and thought. Hilary entices us to think more deeply about our world and the roles we play in protecting it for future generations.
