He takes this argument further in explaining why and how science can be subjective, despite claims to the contrary. However, listeners may feel overwhelmed with his long-winded explanations, which sometimes lose touch with where they started. Burke's delivery needs something more to keep listeners engaged, such as background music or more musical interludes to facilitate transitions. Best Of Burke

Having read Burke's previous efforts, I was prepared to be entertained and amazed at how seemingly unrelated thoughts and developments came together to move history and innovation forward - but this book exceeded my expectations! Another reveiwer commented (accurately) that Burke gives religion a pretty rough time, it must also be said that he gives an incredible perspective on how much impact religious thought impacted people's freedom to think, and how those places tolerant of fresh thinking attracted (and benefitted from) thinking people.
The same is shown to be true of political freedom, economic freedom, and, well, you get the picture...freedoms made great differences.
Burke does a fabulous job of providing meaningful context to innovation and innovators. He also demonstrates that a lot of innovation was not pursued, but rather occurred almost by accident - two things sitting next to each other for the first time, and someone decides to combine them!
If you don't read any of his other books, be sure to read this one! I have only one bit of advice when reading it - pace yourself - it is much too good to rush, so savor it...

Day the Universe Changed (Seriously) Abridged CD Audiobook

This is a review ONLY of the abridged CD audiobook read by the author James Burke. Relative to the book and the video series, each of which have ten chapters, the abridged CD audiobook is missing chapters 4, 6 and 8. In addition, the 3rd CD has sections out of order. The 3rd CD order is:

Chapter 9, Part 2
Chapter 10, Part 3
Chapter 10, Part 4 (the end)
Chapter 10, Part 1
Chapter 10, Part 2
Chapter 9, Part 3
Chapter 9, Part 1

If you copy the content of the three CDs to your iPod you can rearrange the parts as necessary, but the order as it stands is totally confusing.

I happen to think the The Day The Universe Changed video series (previously not available commercially except for a school/library version for $750, but now available at modest cost) is the finest series ever created, and the accompanying The Day the Universe Changed: How Galileo's Telescope Changed The Truth and Other Events in History That Dramatically Altered Our Understanding of the World (Back Bay Books) book is nice because it echoes the videos without repeating the exact same content. But this CD audiobook is missing three of ten chapters and has the last two chapters scrambled. It cannot really be recommended.

Very disappointing, rambles all over without finding a point

This book was very disappointing. Its fragmented writing style reads like a 6th graders' attempt to summarize of all of European history in 5 pages or less. Instead of coherently showing how each of the eight discoveries changed human thought, it just meanders around them at random, never seeming to find the common thread.

I was just a little disappointed in the actual copy of this hardcover. The pages of the book are somewhat flimsy. It would have been better to find a separate cooy of each title.

Another reason to regret the passing of a literary legend

Clancy is in a class all by himself. He keeps you on your toes trying to remember what you are reading is fiction. But, dang it all in his case fiction slides into truth very often. I will personally miss his genius very, very much.

A classic that is still useful

......... this is probably not the first book that you would buy about software testing.
However, the book is a classic and it deserves a place on a serious tester's bookshelf.
Its examples are dated, I think its description of cause-effect graphing is incomprehensible, and its catalog of test types in the pages from 103 forward is sketchy.
The book is valuable because its presentation of the basic issues is clear, concise, and persuasive. The discussion of equivalence classes and boundaries is remarkably clear. When we wrote Testing Computer Software, one of our goals was to handle this important topic as clearly and crisply as Myers. That was a challenge, and I'm not sure we succeeded. (Jorgensen's Software Testing: A Craftsman's Approach does a great job with this topic.) The discussion of bias (one of the issues in the psychology of testing) is also well done.
In short, the first 103 pages of the book are some of the best writing in the field and have had a powerful influence on the writers who came later. Reading them in the original will often, I suspect, make subsequent presentations clearer and more meaningful.

"Must Have" Reference in Every Software Tester's Library

This is by far the most concise and insightful book I've ever read about code level testing. It does not have all the nitty gritty details of every which method ever invented, nor does go into details about the paperwork. But the lists of principles and checklists are priceless.
I would not recommend this book for beginners since it is hard for inexperienced testers to pick out the gems from the dated items.
I agree with a previous review that stated that the first hundred or so pages are must reads. Don't be put off by the $ per page ratio. This book is worth every penny.

Flawed Classic

This book was a noble effort for its time. It's a good starting place, especially since it's the one book on software testing that all the other authors seem to have read. And the chapter on test cases is pretty good.
The book has some problems, though. First and most obviously, the book has a lard factor of about 60%. Short as it is, it needs a lot of pruning. (See Richard Lanham: Revising Prose.)
Second, here and there it is just wrong. E.g., in its answers to the chapter 1 neophyte tester test, there are six, not three, permutations of three distinguishable objects.
Third, he doesn't adequately sum up or review what he's said or done. Nowhere does he have a survey of what techniques one should use to generate all the test cases for his chapter 1 test. In chapter 2 he gives a horrible example of why you can't do exhaustive branch testing of a program with even fairly simple logic inside a loop, but he never comes back to say how you *should* test such a thing. Later on he talks about multiple decision/condition coverage, but he never explains how that differs from exhaustive branch testing.
Also -- OK, it was a first try, so perhaps one shouldn't expect too much. But by now someone should be applying complexity theory to the problem. Given *this* program and *this* test coverage criterion, how many test cases will it take to test this program? And the coverage criteria should be stated in terms of the language definition, i.e. probably in terms of Backus-Naur form.
Buy this book. Read it, with a red pencil in hand. But expect it to raise as many questions as it answers.
