An incomparable little cookbook! Priceless, just like the treasured institutions that good Bistros are.

I have recently started cooking from this book and it is quickly climbing to the top of the chart of my favorite cookbooks. This is no small task considering that this book has no pictures, is not a recent publication, and is competing with books in my collection on French cookery from such stalwarts as Julia Child, Paula Wolfert, Richard Olney, Jacques Pepin, and Anne Willan.

The book embodies the atmosphere of a bistro in look, content and spirit. The book is printed on thick paper that does not have smooth edges (are these called deckled edges?). This gives the book a dated but timeless look, and revived in me warm memories of reading menus in French bistros and the delights that followed. Not only do French Bistros serve good hearty meals, they are also utilitarian in nature where the high finesse of formal French dining is shed for a more relaxed and efficient experience. In keeping with that utilitarian spirit, the book covers have flaps that can be used to earmark pages.

A Bistro above all is a gathering place for the locals to converge and chat over a fine meal. To capture that atmosphere the book employs an easy conversational style. Recipes begin with an anecdote about the recipe or the bistro. This is followed by a uncomplicated but hearty recipe. There are tips, suggestions for alterations, and quotations scattered throughout the book which make it interesting enough that I often read it before bedtime. What I also like is that the recipes are collected in simple menus from various Bistros. Using a menu and following the recipes one can easily create a 2-3 course meal. The wine suggestions are a welcome inclusion.

The recipes themselves are simple. They often call for just two main ingredients (not counting the basic oil/butter and salt/pepper), and yet result in unqualified successes. So far I have tried the Chicken with Garlic, Chicken with Red Wine Vinegar, Potato Salad with Herrings, and a few Potato Gratins. Each time we have ending up licking our fingers wondering how can something this simple taste that good! I would suggest using the best ingredients that one can find. Although this is advisable in any kind of cooking, it is particularly true for recipes such as those in this book that use so few ingredients.

After laboring on an exquisite recipe from Julia Child, I have to admit to the occasional thought crossing my mind, “ Do French families really cook this way every day?”. I now know the answer. Bistro Cooking is a very good book for every day cooking. It is also an excellent resource for those who are beginning to cook. To such novice chefs I urge do not let the lack of pictures dissuade you. In the end what you really want is food that tastes great without a lot of effort or fancy ingredients. This book, with its succinct and precise directions, shall deliver on that goal over and over again. Success from this book shall bolster your confidence and help you tackle recipes from other authors mentioned earlier.

I generally wait to try many recipes from a book before reviewing it. But my enthusiasm for this book got the better of me. I look forward to cooking more from this book, to rekindling fond memories of my favorite French Bistros, to sharing this food with friends and family, and to licking my fingers in contentment afterwards. Mangez bien, riez souvent, aimez beaucoup!

A great trove of the best in old-fashioned French cooking

Patricia Wells' "Bistro Cooking" is a jewel box crammed with with priceless gems, but these are treasures to be worn (eaten) everyday (okay, metaphor is already wearing thin). But Wells' idea here is give the interested cook access to those great meals originally sampled on that trip to France where the food was one of the most memorable parts of the experience. And this isn't about Michelin-starred-restaurant dining which most of us can't really afford. This is that fatty, creamy, lip-smacking stuff that isn't, for the most part, all that difficult to reproduce at home.

There is a great recipe here for pot-au-feu, and how about the daube de boeuf aux cepes et a l'orange? And the great vegetable dishes? Double celery soup? Leek tart? Gratin grand-mere with potato, red pepper and zucchini? And don't get me started on the desserts!

There's also a very useful section on basics like how to make a variety of pastries; mayonnaise; chicken stock, etc. This has all been done in other forms before, but author Wells has pulled together a particularly inspired and useful collection of unmatchable French meals. Definitely an important addition to the cookbook collection of anyone who takes traditional food seriously.

Ivy Leaguer Meets Low Level Minor Leaguers

This is a inside look at what it's like for an Ivy League graduate to try to blend in as one of the boys in a rookie league in the low minors in Mormon country. His teammates ranged from bonus babies to fringe draft choices. More than a few eventually made it to The Show. I got a kick out of Matt McCarthy's having to dumb himself down to be accepted, while maintaining his admittedly Yale-based superiority about religion and academics. He really puts you inside the clubhouse and on the team bus. The off-the-field adventures are hilarious.

McCarthy has come in for criticism from his team's veteran manager and some of the players who he describes have said they were not even on the same team with him that season. Even if some facts have been lost in the four or so years since he played, or names have been changed, this book is easy to read and very accurately captures the flavor of what it's like to try to make it to the majors. George Will could experience vicariously what he never would come close to in real life.

BEST MINOR LEAGUE MEMOIR EVER

This was a great read, well written and expertly paced. Good enough that I Googled the author, his teammates, the Provo Angels, and other aspects of the memoir just to catch up and learn more of them 9 yrs later. I was dismayed to see the book slandered by the NY Times and alliterate bloggers for some negligible discrepancies. The entire memoir rings true and complements accurately the experiences of other low-minor leaguers recorded in previous memoirs (e.g., The Boys Who Would Be Cubs (1990; J. Bosco) and Minor Players, Major Dreams (1997; B.H. Mandel). I consider this the best MiLB memoir I've ever read and I favor the genre.

Is He Really That Odd?

Matt McCarthy's autobio of his time in minor league baseball was quite entertaining and kept me interested in his and his team's exploits throughout. However, I was also left feeling incomplete. Characters could have been more deeply explored, the season covered more in depth, more, more, more. It was all just too superficial, but still managed to fill nearly 300 pages. It's a quick read that's great summer fare, just don't expect much depth to the story or character development. From Yalie to Angels minor league washout to med school intern, good luck Matt. I just hope you have greater appreciation for your skills as a doctor than as a baseball player; self-fulfilling propheses have a way of happening.

RICK "SHAQ" GOLDSTEIN SAYS: "MORE COOKING ACTION THAN CRIMINAL ACTION."

The Hunt Club, a private detective firm in San Francisco headed by Wyatt Hunt is holding on to solvency by a thread. In fact it's a stretch to call it a firm. The employee roster consists of Wyatt a licensed detective... Mickey Dade who does office work and "go-fer" assignments while pursuing his real dream of becoming a chef... and an empty chair that used to be inhabited by Mickey's sister Tamara... who is M.I.A. and "shell- shocked" in the aftermath of her former boyfriend being a murderer in a prior episode by this author. After Wyatt tells Mickey that he's going to have to shut down The Hunt Club in the near future... Mickey decides he'll attempt to take fate into his own hands and find the soon to be defunct detective firm some new business. The following amalgamation of serendipitous circumstances may be a little too convenient for some readers to accept. Mickey while walking by a lagoon comes across the dead body of Dominic Como who "had either founded or sat on the boards of no fewer than six major charities in San Francisco". It turns out that Dominic who was taking in exorbitant sums of money from government agencies... public donations... protection rackets... moving companies... rehab facilities... and more... was murdered. It so happens that Mickey who shares a small apartment with his aforementioned "shell-shocked" sister along with their grandfather Jim Parr... who lo and behold used to be a personal driver for Dominic. After stumbling across the body Mickey is interviewed by local reporters and when he says he works for The Hunt Club a detective agency they think he's a detective and his face... name... and company... are plastered on the evening news. So the moribund detective agency gets free publicity which creates a bevy of potential client activity. Mickey a hertofore cooking class student and office "go-fer" comes up with a plan to have Dominic's charitable and business foundations help create a reward "kitty" that would channel leads from people who wouldn't want to talk to the police to The Hunt Club... and the foundations would pay The Hunt Club for its services. The person that must give final approval on this proposal is Len Turner "a lawyer, pretty much at the top of the charity food chain."

Len approves the proposal based on the understanding that all evidence and info uncovered will be cleared with him and he'll decide what goes public. Wyatt Hunt desperate for financial survival agrees to the semi-ludicrous arrangement. What follows is the equivalent of a "MURDER SHE WROTE" or "MATLOCK" episode. The rest of the book is investigative foot work with the usual suspects... drivers... department heads... scorned lovers... temperamental wife... and loony tipsters such as "the balloon lady" who says she saw Dominic's body dropped from a blimp into the lagoon... all hoping for a large reward.

There is very little physical action and unless you're a hard core fan of Julia Child or Wolfgang Puck... you may be stymied at times by too many intricacies regarding the simple task of making and eating a meal.

Not nearly as good as the Hardy/Glitsky series

This novel is written in Lescroarts trademark writing style: crisp, clear, and fun to read. the glimpses into the life of San Francisco the book offers are priceless. However, the author offers a cast of characters that it's impossible to care about. Wyatt Hunt is a cartoonish superman-type detetcive agency owner. His smugness is extremely annoying. Mickey is his bumbling protegee who falls in love with a very nasty woman. It seems like Lescroart wanted Mickey's love interest to be a positive character but she is in truth nothing other than disgusting. Mickey's drama queen sister Tamara completes the cast of extremely annoying characters that populate this book.

I will not read another Wyatt Hunt novel. They are a waste of time. Lescroart should go back to his Hardy/Glitsky series.

A Diz-mal Failure

Any writer could have written this one. The characters are one-dimensional, and let's face it, who cares about them. The Diz-Abe books are chock full of real characters who we have come to know and support in their trials and tribulations. That is why we remember them from one novel to the next, and most of us had trouble remembering these folks in Treasure Hunt. Please, John, go back to the style that we expect and for which you are so admired.

A must have for a sweet and gentle life

Great if you tend to be hard on yourself and need to feel it's ok to relax. It is a beautiful and calming book to read and use when you need a reminder to let go. It's divided into sections that talk about various parts of our lives alongside beautiful and peaceful pictures. A nice book to keep in a place that reminds you to be in the moment :)

Not happy with the Ending

This was my first Patterson book and I know from following books and writers that he seems to be churning out books quickly, seeming to rely on his name to sell books. But with this book I would ask where is the substance at the end. The story itself was fast moving and clever, but the ending left me wanting more of the loose ends tied up. Maybe that is a way to creast a cliff-hanger with suspens for a sequel.

I read an old musty copy that made my eyes itch but it was worth every page. I adore Henry Miller ~ it's like reading words that are swirling in a blender. It's like he has a machine gun pointed at you and bang bang he starts shooting every word into your flesh except when they hit you, the words feel like whip cream and you just want to bathe in them. This was one writer that was fully alive. It starts off with him saying that he has no money and no resources and that he is the happiest man alive (love that)! This book was published in the 1930s and banned in America for being too smutty. Yes he talks about sex but he talks more about life and even more about living. He has more interesting things to say in this one book than most people ever say in an entire lifetime. This book is deep and funny ~ my favorite kind of books and people. If you haven't read it ~ give yourself a treat and dive bomb right into it. Henry Miller was a genius and even though he's dead ~ you can still enjoy him. He feels very much alive as you read him because he didn't save anything when he wrote ~ he gave everything and it feels like it. I wish more people were more like that ~ everyone is so busy saving it up for a rainy day. Not Henry.

The Worst of The So Called "Greatest Novels"

I will start out with an apology. Perhaps it is I who does not get it... Years ago I set out to read the greatest novels ever written. I found there are various lists with little true consensus. This book is on at least one of the lists. Having read it I was shocked. Shocked, not by its utter crudeness, but that it seems little more than trash. It is a story of an American living in Paris between the two world wars. He is a struggling writer. I use that term most loosely. There are other novels like this. Hemingway's, "The Sun Also Rises" and W. Somerset Maugham's "Of Human Bondage" come to mind among others. To pretend that this novel is in the same league with those novels is what shocks me. Just one example is as follows. The author repeatedly uses the "c word" to refer to female genitalia. It is not clear to me he knows if females have any other purpose or value. Utter nihilism is about the only thing resembling a theme that I can discern. But it is poorly written nihilism. The book supposedly helped create true "free speech". In a manner of speaking, I believe there is an argument to be made for that. But so what? Is that all that is required to make a 'best novel" list? The same be said for "Ulysses" by James Joyce. I am not a big James Joyce fan, but Tropic of Cancer is crude and almost juvenile compared to Ulysses. I truly felt this book could have just as well been written in the bathroom at some junior high school.

Tropic of Cancer is graphic and one of the dirtiest novels written in the English language. It is one of the first novels that influences the emergence of the Beat Generation. It is a great read for a literature class. Highly recommended.
