A Winner for Fans of Military and Espionage Novels Alike

Stephen Coonts seems to have a crystal ball on his desk that provides him with the material for whatever subject he chooses to visit in his most recent novel. Of course, Coonts is not a fortune teller; he is simply possessed of the ability to believe that which he sees in front of him, analyze it and extrapolate. Indeed, it is in much the same manner that his long-running Jake Grafton character functions. Call it an informed guess, but the result is edge-of-the-seat, page-turning reality presented as fiction.

THE DISCIPLE, Coonts's latest novel, brings together Grafton and his protégé, Tommy Carmellini, once again for an excursion into the heart of the darkness of the Middle East. Carmellini, a retired jewel thief turned reluctant CIA operative, has a skill set that serves him well in whatever situation Grafton throws him into, which has never been truer than in THE DISCIPLE. Beginning just after the bombing of a Syrian nuclear reactor (which was never acknowledged as having existed to begin with), Grafton, a former Navy admiral now with the CIA, finds himself facing the prospect of a nuclear-armed Iran. Despite the denials of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, it is obvious that the Iranian nuclear weapons program exists; the question is what will be done with it.

Grafton inserts Carmellini into Tehran for some clandestine boots-on-ground intelligence, and watching the two men work from opposite ends of a very long, sharp and dangerous stick is worth the price of admission to THE DISCIPLE all by itself. Carmellini, masquerading as a passport approval clerk at a foreign embassy, slowly but surely insinuates himself into the Iranian political resistance movement, a nerve-wracking proposition in and of itself given the violently repressive attitude of the government. It is through his association with the resistance movement that Carmellini is able to gain information about Iran's ultimate plan for its nuclear weapons and to transfer the intelligence to Grafton.

What they ultimately discover is that Ahmadinejad plans to martyr Iran and then lead the fundamentalist Muslim world into the ultimate holy war against Israel and the United States. The President, notwithstanding the evidence in front of him, refuses proactive action against Iran, leaving it to Grafton and Carmellini to work within the parameters that are outlined for them. The result is heart-stopping: Iran begins a countdown to Armageddon, while the United States is forced to play catch-up from a reactive position as the fate of the world hangs in the balance.

THE DISCIPLE is stuffed to bursting with Coonts's trademark technology updates, consisting of a cornucopia of items that provide Exhibits A through Z to the proposition that peace is ultimately won through superior firepower. Coonts does not get bogged down in a technical description of the nuts and bolts of which does what and to whom, instead focusing very closely and graphically on cause and effect. He also takes pains, through character development, to examine the social and religious complexities that exist within Iran, which is slowly tearing itself apart from within. An exciting work on a number of levels, THE DISCIPLE will be a winner for fans of military and espionage novels alike.

Born out of the post-punk backlash in the early 80's, Depeche Mode took their name from a phrase in a French style magazine and became the definitive international synth-pop group. Vince Clarke, Andy Fletcher and Martin Gore had started out as an Essex guitar band but it was their bright and upbeat synthesizer-driven brand of pop fronted by Dave Gahan that was to find global acceptance and enjoy unlikely success in the US.

Despite a handful of early plaudits in the music press, the group won only intermittent critical acceptance over the years, its often light musical approach contrasting with lyrics that sometimes plunge into darker topics like S&M, religious fetishism and the scourge of capitalism. But whatever the music press said, the fans finally bought into Depeche Mode in a big way. Their Violator tour at the start of the 90s sold millions of records and turned them into major US concert stars.
In true rock style, Depeche Mode's members have suffered their share of internal strife over a long career. Dave Gahan reinvented himself as a lead singer with both a harder musical edge and a near-fatal drug habit, while internal acrimony often marred the later stages of their career.

Jonathan Miller has made an exemplary job of telling the Depeche Mode saga in its entirety and goes a long way towards explaining how the group have managed to thrive when almost all their post-punk contemporaries fell by the wayside long ago.

The definitive Depeche Mode story

Having just finished reading this entire book, I have to say this is about as thorough as it gets. The book traces the history of the band from the time when they were grade school age to the Exciter era. Nearly 23 years of history. One of the best aspects of the book is the interview with Vince Clarke, and he covers everything, including the age old question of why he left the band. Finally, you get the story from the source. Each of the band members are pretty candid about why they think Vince left, as well as on other topics. Most important Alan Wilder's departure. We get Alan's take on that also. Again, no speculation and rumor, just facts. Alan's story on his years with the band could be a book on it's own.
The book also covers what went into making each DM album and how the sound progressed over the years. Dave, Martin, Fletch, Vince and Alan give us a rare view inside their personal lives and how the excesses of being on the road almost ruined the band. Dave covers his drug abuse and how he climbed out of the lowest depths in his life. What I consider to be somewhat sad but uplifting at the same time seeing how Dave is doing now. There's some really interesting stories about backstage life during concert tours that will be new to a lot of fans.
As a bonus there's several great pictures in the book, many never seen before. A visual history divided into 3 sections, each relevant to the time frame in the book. Childhood pictures and personal photos round out the collection.
As a fan of the band for over 15 years, I would recommend this to anyone. Some fans will find $30 to be a little steep, but it's well worth it. This is Jonathan Miller's first effort and it's better than some books by authors who have written 10. All the questions people have had over the years are all addressed right here. The only flaw is that the discography has the singles released in '84 as being released in '83, a minor mistake. It certainly doesn't detract from the quality of this excellent biography.

Finally Depeche Mode makes sense to me now

Finally a book that really gets into the music and personality of depeche mode and lets you understand them. The previous two books were not good and after reading them twice I was still left totally in the dark about the band.

This book discusses what the others didn't, the music!! It really tells the Depeche Mode story album by album and single by single. He tells about how the albums are made and discusses the working relationships between the group members during those albums. From that perspective he goes into personal bits on the band that really show their personalities. This book doesn't just start talking about their personalities and sorta throw in the albums as time markers. It really shows you how their music develops.

He also really brings up alot of new interviews and facts, which I didn't think existed. After reading the other books, which overlapped alot, this book had refreshing new interviews that shed incredible perspective on the group. Alan's story is finally told as well in great detail...giving some of the most candid insights into the group. Daniel Miller, Gareth Jones, and Vince Clark are covered as well.

I have been a HUGE fan for over 17 years now and until I read this book I always thought that they came from outerspace. Its funny but I will kinda miss that naivete. I had my own ideas of them that weren't true that I will miss. But now that I know the whole story, it inspires me.

BEST BOOK ON THE BAND SO FAR

'Stripped' is the most comprehensive book on Depeche Mode to date - covering all eras of the group's innovative career.

A lot of emphasis is placed on the band's formative years, with contributions given by those who knew the members before they became international stars.

There is however, like most other books written about the band, a lot of second-hand information from previous interviews - and many of these interviews are well known to those who have a keen interest in the group.

There's plenty to read though - and some rare pictures too which avid fans are bound to like.

All in all, it's definitely worth having if your a fan of "the best electronic group in the world".

Ooh! A little different than I expected!

These are a bit dark, reminiscent of Grimm's fairy tales. Aside from that, quite entertaining. This is a interesting look into folklore without the restriction of political correctness.

Finally NKJV for the Kindle .... But no chapter navigation

I have several Bible translations on my Kindle (NIV, NET, ESV, NKJV) and I waited for months for the publisher (Thomas Nelson) to finally release the Kindle edition of the NKJV. I went so far as to write to the publisher and was told that they were taking time to make sure they got it just right. The other translations have the table of contents setup so that at the beginning of each Bible book the chapters have links so that you can jump to them. With the NKJV Kindle edition there are no chapter links so to get to Isaiah Chapter 50 you have to page through until you get there. To make matters worse, you can't tell what chapter you are in except on the first page of each. (see the NET Bible which has chapter and verse notation.

This NKJV for the Kindle was recently updated in October 2009 to fix some of the formatting issues present in the previous version as well as enabling chapter navigation. One word of caution regarding chapter navigation is that it works very well for me with the Old Testament but not so well with the New Testament (would take too long to explain). At any rate, I use this Kindle version as my daily reader and use 4 book marks to pick up where I last left off: 1. In the Old Testament 2. Book of Psalms. 3. Book of Proverbs. 4. New Testament.

When I need to study something in depth, I either go to (blueletterbible dot org) or pull out one of my leather bound Bibles.

Don't at all be afraid to get this bible if you are going to use it as your daily reader. Again, not so good for in depth bible study unless you get really, really good at using the kindle's search feature.

Each page of this Bible contains three columns of very small print. I can't even imagine trying to read it. I am extremely disappointed.

quirky romance with a surprisingly loveable crocodile

Rayne, or Betty, as the carnies know her, is a no nonsense tall woman with a full build and leaves no doubt in anyone's minds that she is fully capable of taking care of herself. What no one realizes is her position amongst the carnies is simply a cover. Her real agenda is locating the stolen diamonds someone amongst the traveling circus stole because her bosses don't take failure lightly. The only upside to her cover is the time she gets to spend with Rip. He possesses all the qualities she could ever want in a man, it's just too bad their time together is limited.

Former Army Ranger Ripley `Rip' Knight's training didn't exactly qualify him for his post military venture as a carnival owner but that didn't stop him from throwing in with his former commander and investing in the World's Largest Traveling Gator Show and Carnival. He's the proud seventy-five percent owner of a twenty foot albino alligator named Sheila, a mix match gang of carnie workers, and Betty - whom he considers the shows good luck charm. Men show up in droves to watch her strip down to a thong and bikini top and wrestle Sheila - and Rip certainly can't blame them. He's right partial to seeing her stripped down too.

As the carnival progresses and Rip and Betty embark on a sensual journey of their own, he realizes that there's far more to her story than she's willing to share and Rip doesn't like secrets. Betty isn't exactly prepared to trust him with the truth about her past or what she's doing amongst the carnival crew. While Betty surrenders her body to Rip at every opportunity she's extremely careful to maintain an emotional distance. Eventually things are going to come to a head and she's going to have to share her secrets or somebody's going to get hurt.

ACID RAYNE by Nathalie Gray and Ciana Stone is a surprisingly captivating read. Not once did I get bored with the storyline or lose interest in the characters. Every single one of them had some trait that just caught my attention and made me wonder about them. I even found myself rooting for the alligator by the end of the story and loved the various twists and turns in the plot. The characters are completely different than what I'd normally expect in a romance but somehow these authors pulled it off - and even managed to make a twelve-hundred-pound crocodile loveable. Romance, suspense, a sense of wonder and the sheer joy of just being alive all come together in a completely satisfying read that bring the Florida wilderness into your home - only without the huge teeth and humidity.

A thrilling joyride!

At first, I thought I wasn't going to like this story. There's a sexual interlude right in the beginning, and I worried it was going to be one of those lots of sex, little story kind of novels. In addition, the heroine is tough as nails and likes rough sex, not my thing. But then, the authors ratchet up the tension with a fast-paced, engrossing story. In addition, what started out as mostly lust grows into a believable and touching love story with great characters.

This isn't the usual predictable romance novel with the same tired H/h. It's a very fun read. Highly recommended.
