La vida del capitán general Gutiérrez Mellado refleja con fidelidad las transformaciones sufridas por el Ejército español durante el siglo XX. Procedente de la clase media madrileña de la Restauración, su temprana orfandad condicionó su ingreso en la Academia General Militar, dirigida por Franco. Participó activamente en el alzamiento del 18 de julio de 1936. Durante la Guerra Civil, sufrió prisión, se asiló en una embajada y fue agente clandestino en la retaguardia madrileña. En la posguerra, la penuria presupuestaria que se impuso al Ejército le llevó a adoptar una postura crítica sobre el régimen franquista. Por profesionalidad, disciplina y sentido del deber, trabajó desde el propio sistema para mejorar los medios y la eficacia de las unidades. Su inteligencia y preparación llamaron la atención del general Díez Alegría y, a la muerte de Franco, atrajo las miradas de los artífices de la Transición. Primer Ministro de Defensa de la Monarquía, su gallarda actitud en el Congreso de los Diputados, el 23 de febrero de 1981, reconcilió a los españoles con sus Fuerzas Armadas. Ya retirado, se marcó la meta de combatir la drogadicción. Murió en accidente de tráfico, enfermo y con ochenta y tres años, camino de Barcelona, para pedir, una vez más, a un grupo de jóvenes universitarios que trabajaran por la paz y la libertad.
