This book is a great American epic in which just about anybody can find themselves completely absorbed. It's the story of a family (two of them, actually) and the drama that unfolds over three generations. Yes, yes... This old-fashioned epic has some superficial characters. A sagely Chinaman and a sociopathic woman to name two. But two-dimensional characters and a rather singular plot line help make a 600 page book a rather quick read. And, for me at least, it doesn't subtract from the profundity of the book. Because it's not what the book is about.

This book is about... Timshel!

What absorbed me into this book was the epic drama, and the reflection on moral choices each character had to make. Each had to deal with their own pressures. Genetics, fate, family, society, money mortality all played their part. But in the end, there was a choice. I feel that anybody who reads this books honestly will reflect upon that element of the book. It makes you think about you own choices that you have to make under similar pressures. This book can help you in reflecting on choices in an attempt to be a better person.
