Seeing a Large Cat (Amelia Peabody Book 9), by Elizabeth Peters

No villain is safe in 1903 Egypt as feisty archaeologist Amelia Peabody embarks on her ninth adventure.

According to an ancient Egyptian papyrus, dreaming of a large cat means good luck. And that's just what Amelia Peabody could use, as her growing family matures in the new century. What's more, Amelia's dashing husband Emerson has received a mysterious warning not to enter the Valley of the Kings. To Emerson's annoyance, Amelia's meddling distracts her attention as she exposes a fraudulent spiritualist, saves a marriage, and plays matchmaker. But diabolical forces are at work when an unknown tomb reveals a shocking murder -- and the Peabody family dodges bullets from an assassin determined to put an end to their discoveries.

Amazon.com Review
Elizabeth Peters's books about Egyptologist Amelia Peabody are like longer, more literate versions of those letters some relatives send to keep people up to date on their family adventures. They're also lively feminist spoofs on the two-fisted Victorian adventure novels that inspired the Indiana Jones films. In this ninth book in the Peabody series, it's 1903, and Amelia and her clan--irascible husband Emerson, fearless son Ramses, gorgeous ward Nefret--are in Cairo, dealing with everything from mummies (both the ancient and more recent varieties) to affairs of the heart. Previous Peabody paperbacks include The Hippopotamus Pool and The Snake, the Crocodile and the Dog.

From Library Journal
Amelia Peabody and family begin the 1903 "digging" season in Egypt with the usual anticipation. At least two pleas for help and a mysterious warning about a Valley of the Kings tomb, however, complicate life and lead to the expected dangerous adventure. Essential reading from a pro.

From Booklist
As her legions of fans will readily testify, Amelia Peabody Emerson, who wields a mean parasol, is not your usual whodunit heroine. Ladies in 1903 did not climb pyramids or excavate Egyptian tombs. And they certainly didn't solve crimes. Amelia, of course, does all three and always does them extremely well. In this new adventure, she's exceptionally busy. Not only must she make sense of a brutal murder and help an old friend whose drippy husband has gone "over the edge," she must also rein in the feminist sensibilities of her pretty adopted daughter (who models herself after Amelia) and keep her headstrong, lovestruck teenage son, Ramses, out of trouble. As usual, Peters' zesty characters--particularly Amelia's explosive archaeologist husband, Radcliffe ("Good Gad, Peabody")--are marvelous, and there's plenty of lively repartee to push the story along. The comedy is great, as well, with Peters' knowing precisely how to balance starchy Amelia's officious social respectability with her penchant for meddling in other people's affairs. I cannot be objective - I love Amelia Peabody.
By dpb
These books are fun to read. I love the books in the Amelia Peabody series - not just for the mystery at the heart of each book but for the characters she writes so well. I enjoy this lively family she has described throughout the series and look forward to see how each of them ages and matures, or doesn't. I also enjoy being immersed in the politics and difficulties of late 19th/early 20th century Egyptology; reading the day to day descriptions of the commitment and intensity and sheer backbreaking work on a dig; the humor and passion of the family who made it their lifes' work to find and responsibly document the tombs of the ancient egyptians and through those discoveries get a glimpse into the life and times of the pharoahs. All of this while facing untold dangers and solving a murder or two. When the series ended I missed the family, but then I remembered as with all books, one can simply turn back to page 1 and begin again.

I love this book... but don't start here!
By Rae
It appears that many people are experiencing the Amelia Peabody series for the first time with this book. If you're planning on reading the series, I strongly suggest that you don't start here! Seeing a Large Cat is one of my favorites, but in all honesty I probably wouldn't have enjoyed it nearly so much if I hadn't read the earlier books first. In my mind, the Amelia Peabody series is not so much about the individual mysteries as it is about the characters, their personalities and their life stories. If you miss out on Ramses as an 8-year-old, you won't fully appreciate him as a teenager! I disliked him for several of the earlier books. I found him annoying and ridiculous and couldn't wait for Amelia to come back to steal the show again. Now I adore him! I found myself constantly waiting to read more from "Manuscript H" to find out what he, David and Nefret were up to. The "children" have become just as interesting as Amelia and Emerson, if not more so, and in Seeing a Large Cat I actually find Amelia more ridiculous and aggravating than Ramses for a good chunk of the time.

I highly recommend this book (and series) to anyone who appreciates character development, light mysteries or Egyptian history. Elizabeth Peters has a wonderfully descriptive writing style. While there are certainly slower moments, I always find them interesting because even if no one is actively solving a mystery, something is always being revealed about the characters. But remember, if you're going to begin with the series start with Crocodile on the Sandbank! Yes, the books can stand alone in this series, but they're so much better when read in order!

The best yet!
By A Customer
"Seeing a Large Cat" is the best Amelia Peabody mystery in quite a while. The children are growing up, (although Amelia has trouble admitting that fact) and have become an integral part of the family.

Adding the journal, perhaps written by Ramses, gave the characters more depth and allowed the reader to see them in a different light.

With her uncanny knack for becoming embroiled in a season of mystery as well as archeological digging, Amelia has her hands full this season. An old friend's husband is being hoodwinked by a con-artist with a consience, a southern Colonel is embroiled in the mystery disappearance of his last wife, his spoiled belle of a daughter is out to find a husband, Ramses being first on her list, and, in pure Amelia and Emerson style, there is the requisite numbers of nefarious people trying to make this the last adventure.

This is a must read for all lovers of suspense, villains, parody and humor.
