He had an idea.

We all know Magellan from our early school years: He was the first to circumnavigate the globe. (Not completely true, as this well-researched book tells us.) He was one of a dozen or more explorers of which we got brief one-line glimpses from our teachers: Balboa discovered the Pacific; Ponce De Leon searched for the Fountain of Youth; in 1942 Columbus sailed the ocean blue. As I am sure it is with these men, there is so much more to Magellan's story. Initially, he was a member of the Queen's and then the King's court in his native land of Portugal. Then he became a heralded Portuguese sailor. Crippled for life serving in the Spice Islands, he returned to his native country with an idea: He could sail eastward through a straight he believed to be somewhere in Brazil and then onto the Islands, which would be a much shorter route than to the west, the current route taken. However, his Portuguese king would have none of it. With his dream fixed firmly in his mind, Magellan went to Spain and there found support of the king and was given a fleet of five ships to follow his dream, which he further believed would prove the Spice Islands belonged to Spain not his home land as was thought at the time. What follows is a three-year trip filled with mutinies, horrendous weather, shipwrecks, friendly and hostile natives, all impeccably researched and well presented by Daniel. There are assumptions that Daniel is forced to make in the telling of this story, but it is obvious that through his research he new his subject so well that he could draw these conclusions with great accuracy. History comes alive!
